Harmful Ingredients in Skincare Products: What to Avoid
As a dermatologist and CEO of Innate Esthetics® and Innate Cosmetics®, I'm committed to helping you make informed decisions about the products you use on your skin. Many skincare and cosmetic products contain ingredients that can be harmful to your health, causing anything from skin irritation to more severe health issues. Below is a list of common ingredients found in skincare products that you should avoid, ranked from most harmful to least.
1. Parabens
What it is: Parabens are a group of synthetic preservatives used to extend the shelf life of cosmetics and skincare products.
Why it’s harmful: Parabens are endocrine disruptors, meaning they can interfere with hormone function, which may lead to reproductive issues and increased risk of certain cancers, such as breast cancer. They can also cause skin irritation, especially in those with sensitive skin. Look out for ingredients like methylparaben, ethylparaben, propylparaben, and butylparaben on labels.
2. Formaldehyde and Formaldehyde-Releasing Agents
What it is: Formaldehyde is a preservative and disinfectant, while formaldehyde-releasing agents are chemicals that release formaldehyde over time to prevent bacterial growth.
Why it’s harmful: Formaldehyde is a known carcinogen, meaning it can increase the risk of cancer, particularly when inhaled or absorbed through the skin. It can also cause allergic reactions, skin irritation, and respiratory issues. Ingredients such as DMDM hydantoin, quaternium-15, and imidazolidinyl urea are examples of formaldehyde-releasing agents.
3. Phthalates
What it is: Phthalates are chemicals used to increase the flexibility and durability of plastics and are commonly found in fragrances, nail polishes, and hair sprays.
Why it’s harmful: Phthalates are also endocrine disruptors and have been linked to reproductive issues, birth defects, and an increased risk of chronic diseases such as diabetes. They are often hidden under the term “fragrance” on ingredient lists, making them harder to identify.
4. Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) and Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES)
What it is: SLS and SLES are surfactants used to create lather in soaps, shampoos, and cleansers.
Why it’s harmful: These sulfates can strip the skin of its natural oils, leading to dryness, irritation, and an increased likelihood of allergic reactions. SLES is often contaminated with 1,4-dioxane, a probable human carcinogen, which can penetrate the skin and cause systemic damage.
5. Synthetic Fragrances
What it is: Synthetic fragrances are complex mixtures of various chemicals used to give products a pleasant scent.
Why it’s harmful: Many synthetic fragrances contain phthalates and other harmful chemicals that can cause skin irritation, allergies, and respiratory problems. They are also potential endocrine disruptors and may contribute to hormone imbalances. Since companies are not required to disclose the specific chemicals used in their fragrance blends, it’s often difficult to know exactly what you’re being exposed to.
6. Triclosan
What it is: Triclosan is an antibacterial and antifungal agent used in soaps, hand sanitizers, and toothpaste.
Why it’s harmful: Triclosan has been linked to hormone disruption, increased resistance to antibiotics, and the development of superbugs. It can also contribute to skin irritation and allergies, especially with prolonged use.
7. Polyethylene Glycols (PEGs)
What it is: PEGs are petroleum-based compounds used as thickeners, solvents, and softeners in skincare products.
Why it’s harmful: PEGs can be contaminated with ethylene oxide and 1,4-dioxane, both of which are known carcinogens. They also strip the skin of its natural moisture, leading to dryness and irritation, and can make the skin more vulnerable to environmental toxins.
8. Retinyl Palmitate
What it is: Retinyl palmitate is a form of vitamin A used in anti-aging products and sunscreens.
Why it’s harmful: While vitamin A derivatives can be beneficial for the skin, retinyl palmitate can break down in sunlight to produce free radicals, which can damage DNA and increase the risk of skin cancer. It can also cause skin irritation and sensitivity, particularly in higher concentrations.
9. Talc
What it is: Talc is a mineral used as a filler and to absorb moisture in powders, blushes, and eye shadows.
Why it’s harmful: Talc can be contaminated with asbestos, a known carcinogen, which has been linked to respiratory issues and cancers such as mesothelioma. Even asbestos-free talc has been associated with ovarian cancer when used in the genital area. Additionally, inhaling talc particles can cause lung irritation.
10. Mineral Oil
What it is: Mineral oil is a byproduct of petroleum and is commonly used in moisturizers and creams to lock in moisture.
Why it’s harmful: While mineral oil itself is not considered highly toxic, it can clog pores, leading to acne and other skin issues. It also forms a barrier on the skin that can prevent it from breathing and expelling toxins, potentially leading to a buildup of harmful substances on the skin.
Avoiding these harmful ingredients is a critical step in maintaining healthy, radiant skin and protecting your overall well-being. Always read ingredient labels carefully and opt for products that use natural, non-toxic ingredients. Remember, what you put on your skin can have a profound impact on your health, so choose wisely and prioritize your long-term wellness.
