Why I Don't Use Soap on My Face: Insights from Dr. Lazuk, CEO of Innate Esthetics®

As a dermatologist with years of experience in the skincare industry, I've seen firsthand the impact of different cleansing routines on the skin. One topic that often comes up is whether using soap is beneficial or harmful for facial skincare. Surprisingly, my stance may differ from conventional wisdom, as I advocate against using soap on the face. Let me share why.

The pH Factor:

Our skin has a natural pH balance, typically around 4.7 to 5.75. This slightly acidic environment is crucial for maintaining healthy skin, as it supports the skin's protective barrier and prevents the growth of harmful microorganisms. Most soaps, however, are alkaline in nature, with a pH ranging from 9 to 10.5. When we use such alkaline products on our face, we disrupt the skin's pH balance, leading to dryness, irritation, and sometimes even acne flare-ups.

Stripping Natural Oils:

Another concern with soap is its ability to strip away the skin's natural oils. While excess oil can contribute to acne, our skin needs a certain amount of oil to stay hydrated and supple. Soap, especially harsh varieties, can remove not just the excess oil but also the beneficial oils that help maintain skin health. This can leave the skin feeling tight, dry, and more prone to damage.

Sensitive Skin Woes:

For individuals with sensitive skin, using soap can be particularly problematic. The harsh ingredients in many soaps can trigger allergic reactions, redness, and inflammation, making existing skin conditions worse. As a dermatologist, I often recommend gentler alternatives for cleansing, especially for those with sensitive or reactive skin types.

Alternative Cleansing Methods:

So, what do I recommend instead of soap? Opt for gentle cleansers specifically formulated for the face. Look for products that are soap-free, non-comedogenic, and ideally, have a pH balanced to match that of the skin. These cleansers effectively remove dirt, oil, and impurities without disrupting the skin's natural balance or stripping away essential oils.

Final Thoughts:

In my practice at Innate Esthetics®, I prioritize educating my clients about skincare practices that promote long-term skin health. While soap has its place in personal hygiene, using it on the face can be counterproductive for many individuals. By choosing milder, pH-balanced cleansers, you can cleanse your skin effectively without compromising its natural integrity. Your skin will thank you for it in the long run.
